Psychologist Dr. Christopher Kearny is a leading expert in the research and treatment of school refusal. He is world renowned and a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the UNLV Child School Refusal and Anxiety Disorders Clinic. He actually is ‘the guru” (maybe in addition to Dr. Marie Albano) of school refusal providers and research. He developed the School Refusal Assessment scale. I was thrilled to come across this podcast where he talks about school refusal, differences between elementary school kids and middle/high school kids. He talks about treatments. He provided an interesting statistic that I assumed but never really heard or read…90% of middle/high school kids who have school refusal are avoiding social and evaluative situations.

School-Based Intervention Teams, School Avoidance, School Refusal, and Truancy
When a child begins missing school consistently, families often hear a mix of terms—school avoidance, school refusal, and truancy. These words are sometimes used interchangeably, yet they describe very different realities. Understanding these distinctions is essential, not only for parents, but for schools tasked with responding appropriately.
