Psychologist Dr. Christopher Kearny is a leading expert in the research and treatment of school refusal. He is world renowned and a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the UNLV Child School Refusal and Anxiety Disorders Clinic. He actually is ‘the guru” (maybe in addition to Dr. Marie Albano) of school refusal providers and research. He developed the School Refusal Assessment scale. I was thrilled to come across this podcast where he talks about school refusal, differences between elementary school kids and middle/high school kids. He talks about treatments. He provided an interesting statistic that I assumed but never really heard or read…90% of middle/high school kids who have school refusal are avoiding social and evaluative situations.
There are effective new tools families and schools can use to help kids w anxiety disorders or school avoidance get back to school. These interventions have created some confusion around the meaning of the word “accommodations.”
